The earliest spring has finally arrived. In Nature, elements are interconnected, affecting and depending on each other. Longer days and higher temperatures awaken plants from slumber, resulting in the earliest food for the first, still tiered bees, and also free wild food for us. A quick walk on the allotment reveals that the nettles, wild garlic, pulmonaria and dandelion leaves are available, free, untamed, wild and ready to be consumed. Please remember to forage sustainably, leave some food for other people and animals too.

The plot itself seems rather quiet. A few weeds grow there, mulch is wet and compressed properly. Annuals are showing the first signs of life too. The plot is wet but there is a magic brewing below the surface. In the meantime, I continued cleaning the plot (as the mess makes me nervous), and have built the quirky shed using reclaimed wood. Took me a few walks on the local beaches to find suitable timber for the porch. The pile of that reclaimed wood is now erected and connected in a way that it acts as a quirky shed. It reflects my mind well…

Inspired by the small whimsy porch on the shed, whose main purpose is to provide a space for contemplation, I have created this reclaimed wood whimsy hobbit birdhouse that has a small porch too. I have been running WoodLives for 4 years now and have created many handmade objects using mostly reclaimed wood, to keep the embodied energy of my products lower. More about WoodLives and my products can be found here (opens up in the new window).

Creating an organic potager allotment is one of 2 main personal projects that I will be engaging in this year. The expectations are high, and as a person who never plans, I have to keep improvising and learning along the way. I know 2 things: I want more plants than last year and definitely go into the height more (mulleins, runner beans, sunflowers, verbenas…). Space is a problem for me, so I`ll have to grow all the plants in my house before they are ready to be planted outside. But this is something that I have been doing for probably 20 years now, and have learned how to deal with that “mess” downstairs. When you cross 30, you can say that something happened 20 years ago because, for the first time in your life, you remember that period. Scary and satisfying at the same time…
